Okay, finally, here is my promised post about my least favorite Christmas songs!
I love schmaltz and sap, honest I do, but I have a list of Christmas songs that I really dislike. Some are specific versions of songs but others are just the song in general -- doesn't matter who sings it! The following is in no particular order:
- Christmas Shoes - Newsong. ICK ICK ICK! A major eye-roller, as my mom and I would say. I hate songs that were written just to make people cry. I can't believe there's an actual movie (and a sequel to that movie!) as well.
- Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt version only. I think it's because my mom hates it so much and it's rubbed off on me. I like the Madonna version just fine.
- Jingle Bells - the barking dogs version
- Most anything by Trans Siberian Orchestra (with the exception of Christmas Canon) and Manheim Steamroller - I know many of you will disagree with me but I call this "angry music"
- Same Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg. Way too depressing to be a Christmas song.
- Mary, did you know? Major melodrama -- way too much.
- Anything on Rick Springfield's Christmas album. I bought it for a friend last year because she just loves him and it has got to be the worst CD ever. EVER. Okay, this particular song I linked is dedicated to the troops so while I appreciate the thought, it is seriously a bad CD.
- Christmas in America by Kenny Rogers. Blech. Plus I think he does the talking over the music thing partway through. Say it with me people...blech.
- Feliz Navidad. I mostly tolerate the original version but the Jon Secada version? BAD.
- You Make it Feel Like Christmas by Neil Diamond. I don't totally hate the song but hate the way Neil says ChristMASS.
And another song category? Songs that are not Christmas songs so quit calling them that! (I really hope all of the "Warm" music station program managers are reading my blog right now.)
- Get Here - The Oleta Adams version is my favorite but seriously there is not one bit of Christmas in that song.
- My Favorite Things - just because it talks about packages tied up in string and says the words "sleigh bells", doesn't make it a Christmas song! Who started this anyway? They need to be smacked around a little. Oh and I specifically linked a version sung by Dionne Warwick. Not my favorite singer.
- Seasons of Love from Rent. I've read the lyrics and I still don't know how that one became a Christmas song. I've never seen the play or movie -- maybe the song is played during Christmas time or something???
Okay - your turn. Agree or disagree? Anything I've forgotten?

OK- So I have a beef. "Mary Did You Know" is my most favorite Christmas song and one of my favorites to play on my guitar? It talks about the life of Christ through Mary's point of view. How is that too melodrama!?!?
However, the first time I heard this song was by Kathy Mattea and in my humble opinion the only person who should sing it. She sings it rich and deep...the way it should be sung. This was like 9 years ago. I immediately learned how to play it on my guitar because I loved it so much. THEN, it's like it caught on fire! Cheesy musicians like Donny Osmond started singing it. Now-if its versions like that of this song that your listening to, then I could maybe understand where you're coming from. Anyhow-go look up the Kathy Mattea version. Her entire Christmas album is A-mazing. One of my very favorite Christmas albums of ALL time. Yes, I said it. ALL TIME.
Oh and the Christmas song I can't stand: "Christmas in the Northwest" is the gift God wrapped in green??? Come on!
Andrew just played the Kathy Mattea album for me last night and it really is good. Also, Jazzy was right about Christmas in the Northwest. But you already knew how i feel about that one... :D
You forgot Christmas in the Northwest and Walking in Seattle's Latte Land!! Also Hands by Jewel. Not a Christmas song. And along those lines Harry Potter is not a Christmas movie. I has a Christmas scene, but are there really so few Christmas movies that ABC has to include that one in the 25 days of Christmas every year? I think they must just have rights to it, because they play it all the time. :) Good show, just not Christmas. Wow sorry to rant and rave. Most Christmas music is amazing and I love it. It's just those few I guess.
P.S. Let me know if you need to borrow that quality book you and Mom picked out for me last Christmas. The glitter and shoes on the cover make it impossible for anyone to deny. I know you will agree.
I totally agree with you! My Favorite things is so not a Christmas song! I've already commented on my feelings about Mary did you Know (come on Donny, you know better). And Christmas shoes-blech. Thanks for a fun post!
Ba-hum-bug.
"Last Christmas" by the Wham guy. I LOVE the music but hate the lyrics.
My family watched the "Christmas Shoes" movie Sunday night(love Rob Lowe, though not the greatest actor) because it IS cheesy.
Jazzy -- I totally forgot about Kathy Mattea because I've been scarred by the Donny & Clay versions. I think you need to do a little concert for us so we can gain a better appreciation for the song!! ;)
Adrian -- I had Seattle's Latte Land on my list and took it off when I couldn't find a clip! Loathe that song.
Jazzy, Adrian & Callie, I know I should hate "Christmas in the Northwest" but I don't really hate it enough to add it to the list. I don't own it though -- I just don't necessarily change stations when it comes on the radio.
And Adrian -- I completely agree about Harry Potter! Just because Harry celebrates Christmas, doesn't mean it's a Christmas movie! ABCFamily should just replay actual Christmas movies more often or they shouldn't start showing them so dang early.
Sheryl -- I just can't watch movies where I know they are just trying to manipulate you into crying. This includes everything they show on Lifetime!
Fun comments everyone -- thanks! :)
I agree with most of those. Might I add though that I LOVE anything Christmas by Josh Groban. Then again I pretty much love Josh Groban.
You are too funny. I love hearing opinions. Actually though, I like the song "Mary did you know!"
It makes a huge difference who sings it though. Like I said "O Holy night" is my favorite song, but if it is sung by someone annoying or horrible it is awful!!!! We sang it in our HS choir and the version was sooooooo beautiful. I wish I could have that on tape. Oh well.
I need to go listen to some of the other songs. Santa baby's pretty fun too :)
haha The topic is too HOT for me, but I love reading everyone's comments...and I love the way you write Jeanelle! Just smile when one of the songs is sung tonight at Enrichment....xo
I can't stand that stupid Christmas Shoes song either. I throw up in my mouth a little each time it plays
You're hilarious. Christmas shoes is my ALL TIME least fave Christmas song. Seriously. It pains me to listen to it.
And though I LOVE Neil Diamond, I don't think he should sing Christmas songs. It's just awful!! There's a few others I hate but I can't think of them now, but I loved this list.
And I'm with YOU that I can't stand 'Mary, did you know'. I'm horrible. I realize this, but seriously... I can't handle it. Especially with Kenny. ick.
